About Ovulation Test Lines - Positive Vs. Negative

Determining the result of an OPK (Ovulation Predictor Kit, also known as an ovulation test), is similar across qualitative tests, which rely on a control line and test line to determine the test result.

Positive Ovulation Test
If the test line appears and is the same color or a darker color than the control line, the test is positive. Positive means an LH (Luteinizing Hormone) surge has been detected, and ovulation will most likely occur between 24 and 48 hours after the test is taken.
Negative Ovulation Test
If no test line appears, or the test line is lighter than the control line, the test is negative, meaning an LH surge is not detected. Most OPK makers suggest taking an OPK again on the next cycle day.

Tips: Unlike a pregnancy test which should be taken using FMU (first morning urine), most qualitative OPKs suggest taking the test between 10am to about 8pm, and avoiding fluids for about 2 hours prior to testing so as not to dilute LH, if present.
Invalid Ovulation Test
If there's no control line, the test is invalid. This means if just a test line displays, it is invalid.

Avoiding Invalid Test - Make sure to follow the OPK's instructions, including dipping the OV test up to the MAX line, but no further.
